Jim Peterson is a US-trained and qualified lawyer, concentrating for over thirty-five years on complex multi-national matters involving corporate securities and financial information.
He is a graduate of Yale College (BA, English, 1967) and the Yale Law School (JD, 1972), and is admitted to practice in New York, Illinois and United States federal courts.
In both law firm and individual practice, he has represented global companies and the international accounting firms and their professional groups in disputes, negotiations, government agency proceedings and standard-setting, as well as advising at senior levels in the underlying strategic debates.
From 1972 to 1982, he was associated with the New York law firm of Breed, Abbott & Morgan. From 1982 to 2001, he was a senior in-house lawyer (partner from 1985) in the Arthur Andersen Worldwide Organization, with focus on the firm’s litigation and disputes, and working extensively with the accounting profession's practice quality policies and risk management strategies.
In 1997, he expatriated to Paris, as Andersen’s senior lawyer in the European region until 2001, when he retired and established his individual practice.
He wrote "Balance Sheet," a financial and accountancy column, bi-weekly in the International Herald Tribune from April 2002, followed in January 2008 by the launch of his weblog, “Re: Balance”.
He has published articles in accounting and legal journals including the Journal of Accountancy (the professional journal of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) and the American Corporate Counsel Association's journal -- the Docket -- along with occasional book reviews and other commentary.
Beginning in 2009, he has been teaching an MBA-level course in risk management and decision-making at business schools in Paris and Chicago.
He is a regular speaker, panelist and commentator before professional groups and trade associations, internationally and in the United States.
He divides his residential time between Paris and Chicago.
